Mason, Ryan, Versteeg nominated for Calder

Toronto, ON (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Anaheim forward Bobby Ryan, Columbus
goaltender Steve Mason and Chicago forward Kris Versteeg were nominated as
finalists for the Calder Trophy.
Mason, taken in the third round by the Blue Jackets in 2006, led the NHL with
10 shutouts and ranked second with a 2.29 goals-against average. His strong
season helped the Blue Jackets to the first playoff appearance in franchise
history. He was the first rookie to lead the league in shutouts since Tony
Esposito had 15 in 1970.
"It's a huge honor," Mason said. "You look at some of the players who have won
it in previous seasons, like Patrick Kane last year. It was nice to see him
have that success in his rookie season and it has translated into more success
this year. So, past winners have gone on to some pretty special careers."
Ryan, the second pick of the 2005 draft behind Sidney Crosby, led all rookies
in scoring with 31 goals and 57 points.
Versteeg, a fifth-round choice of the Boston Bruins in 2004, led all rookies
with 31 assists while finishing second to Ryan with 53 points. Versteeg is
seeking to become the second Blackhawk in a row to win this award as his
teammate Kane took the trophy last season.
The trophy will be awarded at the NHL awards ceremony on June 18 in Las Vegas.
